Relaunch! Saving the Florida Manatee

Updated: Jun 27

Happy Friday, and happy relaunch! This past Wednesday, UP Cycle Design relaunched our sale of the Save the Manatee cloth sticker, now made via appliqué (definition: ornamental needlework in which pieces of fabric are sewn or stuck onto a large piece of fabric to form pictures or patterns)! This process allows us to create stronger, sturdier stickers and add finer details to each one.

Line of different colored manatee stickers

During our hiatus, we spent a lot of time prototyping new ways to make our designs (and in this case, our product of stickers!). We eventually settled on the appliqué process, and with the help of an embroidery machine, we cut down drastically on the amount of time it takes to make each sticker. Like I mentioned above, these stickers are hardier, and a combination of discarded fabric scraps that otherwise would have ended up in landfills and thread made from plastic water bottles diverted from the environment, making them the perfect upcycled product!

We relaunched the Save the Manatee sticker first because Florida manatees are currently facing a dire situation: they are starving! Manatees feed mainly on sea grasses, but because of algal blooms due to factory pollution and runoff, no sunlight can break through the water to nourish sea grass populations. In 2021 alone, one sixth of the endangered Florida manatee population was lost.

How does purchasing a Save the Manatee sticker help? With each purchase, we donate an increased amount, now $5 (as opposed to 15% from our last design) to the Save the Manatee Club in Florida. They are an organization actively working to combat the crisis that Florida manatees are experiencing. If you purchase a bundle of 3 stickers, you’ll get a $5 discount as well. Shipping is also factored into the price, so there is no need to worry about that. By buying our stickers, not only are you supporting a small business, but you’re also helping to save a beautiful species from extinction and helping to protect the environment from pollution and landfills from waste!
